Executive Director's Report

My job is to best represent your interests. The more information I have from you the more confident I am doing my job.

That’s why we ask you to do so many online surveys. Your responses are invaluable. They provide the basis for our strategy at the legislature, comments to the media and decisions on services and training we provide.

If you haven’t done so, please fill out the very brief Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) survey. (Or take it directly in C-notes below.)

In the past week alone, CIT has been the subject of a series of stories in the Star Tribune and an article in the Pioneer Press.

A bill mandating four hours of CIT for officers every three years stalled this past session at the legislature.

We know the issue will be back again next session. We also know you’re dealing with more and more mental health calls and most of you need money to send officers to CIT.

Again, please fill out the survey and give us the information we need to shape our legislative position.

MCPA Executive Director

Chief's Chat: Preservation of Life Award

We have a chief who is thinking of adding a Preservation of Life Award to his department's annual awards process.

It's proposed as follows:
Awarded for an act performed in the line of duty where the officer could have justifiably used deadly force, but without unnecessarily jeopardizing the safety of all involved, used other methods to successfully and safely end the situation without using justifiable deadly force.
*A ceramic pin and letter of commendation will be presented.

The department has a Life Saving Award but not something like this.

The chief feels it follows the President’s 21st Century Policing initiative. However, he is aware of the concern it caused in the Los Angeles PD a few years ago and most recently with the U. S. Border Patrol Agents.

We'd like to hear you feedback. Click here to join the conversation.
