MCPA's wellness series is called Strength & Resiliency: A Tactical Approach to Wellness.  It is offered annually as a 3-part series and can also be customized for agencies. The course is led by Dr. Paul Nystrom who provides an overview of physical wellness including challenges specifically related to law enforcement such as lifestyle, stress, sleep patterns, shift work, diet and exercise.    Dr. Nystrom also covers resources, suggestions and recommendations on how to live an overall healthy lifestyle and increase longevity.

Paul Nystrom

Paul Nystrom is both a doctor of emergency medicine and part-time police officer for the Plymouth Police Department.  Dr. Nystrom grew up in Minnesota, went to medical school at the University of Iowa and spent four years on active duty in the U.S. Navy. One year was spent doing a Transitional Internship in Portsmouth, VA. He then completed six months of Dive Medical Officer/Undersea Medical Officer training in Groton, CT and Panama City, FL. He was stationed in San Diego, CA with Naval Special Warfare Group ONE from 2007 to 2009.


Dr. Nystrom finished his Emergency Medicine residency at Hennepin County Medical Center in 2012. He then completed a 2-year EMS Fellowship, which included the police academy at Hennepin Technical College. He now works in the Emergency Department at HCMC, as an EMS medical director and with Plymouth police. He is especially interested in wellness for public safety personnel.
