Membership Information
MCPA members enjoy exclusive benefits designed to enhance professional development, foster collaboration, and support a shared commitment to excellence in policing. Your membership strengthens the collective voice and influence of Minnesota’s law enforcement community. Memberships run on a calendar-year basis, from January 1 to December 31. (Approval is contingent upon meeting the stated eligibility requirements.) Below you’ll find details about each membership type and links to apply. Professional Development & Training Opportunities MCPA members gain access to exclusive training and leadership development through MCPA trainings and conferences. Members also receive reduced registration rates for the Executive Training Institute (ETI) and Expo, the association’s premier annual event that brings together law enforcement leaders from across Minnesota for high-quality training, networking, and nationally recognized speakers. Information Sharing Members receive timely updates and communications through multiple channels, including C-Notes, MCPA’s weekly newsletter. C-Notes provides information on upcoming events, training opportunities, legislative updates, grants, scholarships, and other important association news. Networking Build connections with police chiefs and other law enforcement professionals across Minnesota through association events, online platforms, and regional meetings. Peer Support Gain access to Tradewing, MCPA’s online member community. This platform provides a space for networking, collaboration, peer support, and resource sharing. Legislative Advocacy The MCPA represents the collective voice of Minnesota’s law enforcement leaders at the Capitol, developing an annual legislative agenda based on member input and collaborating with key stakeholders to advance public safety initiatives. Legal Assistance Program (LAP) Members may opt into the LAP for an additional $150 per year. The program provides free legal services valued up to $2,500 for non-criminal, employment-related matters. MCPF Grants & Scholarships Through the Minnesota Chiefs of Police Foundation (MCPF), members are eligible to apply for grants and scholarships that support professional development and continuing education. Leadership & Governance Opportunities Voting members enjoy association voting privileges and the opportunity to serve on MCPA committees or the Board of Directors. Voting Member
Voting memberships are available to the chief law enforcement officers (CLEOs) of state or local law enforcement agencies in the State of Minnesota authorized by law to employ peace officers, excluding county sheriffs. The CLEO shall be the highest-ranking officer in the agency holding an active POST license under the rules of the Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST Board). Dues are paid annually based on the number of licensed officers.

Associate Member
Associate membership are available to sheriffs and command staff in police agencies. Specifically: federal, state or local law enforcement official whose office is in the State of Minnesota, or a contiguous state or province, and who is in charge of, the second-in-command of, or holds the rank of captain or higher of the law enforcement agency, including county sheriff's departments, and who does not qualify to be a voting member. Also included are any appointed official who directly supervises those persons outlined above and/or Voting members, yet who does not qualify to be a voting member.
Retired Member
Retired memberships are for individuals who were Voting members in good standing at the time of their retirement from public service.
Supporting Member
Supporting memberships are available to organizations whose business, profession or interest brings them in close relationship with the Voting or Associate membership of the Association, and who support the mission and purpose of the Association.
