MCPA Statement on the Tragic Shooting Involving Rep. Hortman and Sen. Hoffman

The Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association is devastated by the horrific shootings that took the lives of Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, and left Senator John Hoffman and his wife seriously injured. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and all those impacted by these tragic events.

This senseless and targeted violence strikes at the heart of public service and threatens the sense of safety all Minnesotans should feel. Reports that the suspect may have worn clothing resembling a police uniform and used a vehicle resembling a squad car add another layer of concern and further compromise the trust that communities place in law enforcement.

We are confident that local agencies are doing everything possible to apprehend any suspects at large. Upholding the integrity of our state’s police officers and the trust Minnesotans place in law enforcement remains a high priority.
